Hotel vs farmhouse wedding

Hotel or farmhouse wedding? Compare per-plate costs, rooms, service, décor, timings and guest comfort, with a clear verdict for Delhi NCR.

Venue with chandeliers and floral decor
The short answer A five-star hotel wedding in Delhi NCR costs ₹3,500–₹7,000 per plate plus taxes and includes rooms, service and a weatherproof ballroom. A farmhouse costs less per plate but adds rent, décor and logistics. Hotels suit outstation guests and formal receptions; farmhouses suit open-air winter weddings.
Option A

Hotel

A ballroom or lawn at a four- or five-star hotel, with catering, service and rooms on site.

Best for: Weddings with many outstation guests, receptions and families who value service.

vs
Option B

Farmhouse

A private farmhouse with lawns, rented by the function, with vendors brought in.

Best for: Open-air winter weddings, big guest lists and custom design.

Our verdict

Hotel or Farmhouse?

Pick a hotel when guest comfort, rooms and a polished service matter more than space — especially for outstation guests. Pick a farmhouse when you want an open-air setting, a large guest list and full design control, and your date falls between November and March.

What you are really choosing

A hotel wedding is about service and convenience: one team handles food, drinks, rooms, parking and cleaning, and the ballroom works in any weather. A farmhouse wedding is about space and freedom: you get open sky, room for a big guest list and complete control over the look, but you also coordinate many more vendors.

The real cost difference

Hotels look expensive because their per-plate price is higher and includes taxes, service and the space. Farmhouses look cheaper until rent, décor for an empty lawn, generators, lighting, washrooms and shuttles are added. For 300 guests at one function, a hotel typically costs ₹12–25 lakh and a farmhouse ₹10–18 lakh. When many guests are from out of town, the hotel’s room block often closes the gap, because you avoid shuttles and a second property. Compare both in the budget calculator and plan rooms with the guest stay calculator.

Guest experience

Elderly relatives often prefer hotels: short walks, lifts, clean washrooms and a room to rest between functions. Younger guests often prefer farmhouses: space to dance, bonfires, and a party that runs late. Think about who matters most on your list.

Rules and restrictions

Hotels have strict minimum guarantees for plates and rooms, empanelled decorators and bar packages. Farmhouses have fewer rules but outdoor music limits, and you must arrange the bar licence yourself. Read the contract closely either way.

A practical middle ground

Some families split the difference: a farmhouse for the mehendi, haldi and pheras, when open air and natural light matter most, and a hotel for the reception, when elders want comfort and the party needs to run late. Others book a hotel room block for outstation guests and run shuttles to a nearby farmhouse. If you take this route, keep the two properties within twenty or thirty minutes of each other and schedule shuttles at fixed times, printed on the room welcome card, so nobody is left waiting in the cold after a late function.

Our verdict

If more than a third of your guests are travelling, or your date is outside winter, a hotel is usually the better choice. If most guests are local, the wedding is in winter and the setting matters most, choose a farmhouse. See real examples in Gurgaon venues and read Aditi and Karan’s farmhouse wedding.

Frequently asked questions

Per plate, yes. All-in, the gap is smaller because a farmhouse adds rent, décor, generators and shuttles. For outstation-heavy weddings, a hotel can even come out cheaper.

Rarely. Most hotels insist on in-house catering, though some allow a specialist counter for a fee.
