    Licences & responsible service

Most states need an occasional or event liquor licence (and sometimes an excise permit) for serving alcohol at a function; the venue or caterer can usually apply for it.
Dry states and dry days apply; check local rules and the venue's corkage policy before you buy.
Serve responsibly: no service to under-age guests, keep water and non-alcoholic drinks at every bar, and arrange safe rides home.

    Quick insights

What affects how much alcohol you need?

    Drinking guests

Only guests who drink count. A 25% or 75% share changes the quantities by half or more.

    Bar hours

Consumption is about 1.5 drinks per drinking guest per hour, so a six-hour party needs half as much again as a four-hour one.

    Drink mix

Drinks are split evenly across the types you choose; beer and wine need far more bottles than spirits.

    Event type

Sangeets and cocktail nights usually see more drinking than the wedding ceremony or day functions.

    Methodology

    How this is calculated

The alcohol calculator estimates drinks from the number of drinking guests, the hours the bar is open and a moderate 1.5 drinks per drinking guest per hour. It converts drinks into Indian purchase units (750 ml bottles, 330 ml cans, 650 ml bottles and cases) and adds mixers and an indicative budget.

Drinking guests = guests × drinking share, and drinks = drinking guests × hours × 1.5, plus a 10% buffer (rounded up).

Drinks are split evenly across the selected drink types. Beer uses one 330 ml can or bottle per drink, spirits 30 pegs per 750 ml bottle and wine 5 glasses per bottle, always rounded up.

Cases are 24 × 330 ml cans or 12 × 650 ml beer bottles, and 12 × 750 ml for spirits and wine.

Mixers per drinking guest per hour: water 0.45 L, soft drinks 0.18 L, soda 0.08 L, juices 0.10 L and ice 0.16 kg, plus the buffer. The budget uses indicative price ranges per bottle.

    • Excise duty, permits, corkage and bar staff are not included in the budget.
    • Please serve responsibly and follow local laws on alcohol service.

    Questions

    Frequently asked

If half of 500 guests drink over four hours, plan about 1,650 drinks including a 10% buffer. Split across beer, whisky, vodka, rum and wine, that is about 330 beers, 11 bottles of each spirit and 66 bottles of wine.

About 30 pegs of 25 ml, or 25 pegs of 30 ml. The calculator uses 30 servings per 750 ml bottle of spirits and 5 glasses per bottle of wine.

Spirits and wine usually come in cases of 12 × 750 ml. Beer comes in cases of 12 × 650 ml bottles or 24 × 330 ml cans. The calculator rounds up to whole bottles and cases.

In most states, yes. Serving alcohol at a private function usually needs an occasional or event licence from the state excise department, and some states are dry. Ask your venue or caterer, who often arrange it.

No. The budget range uses indicative retail prices per bottle. State excise duty varies widely, and many venues charge corkage or require you to buy from them.
