Destination wedding
Two to four days in Jaipur, Udaipur, Goa or elsewhere, with guests staying together.
Best for: Couples who want an intimate, immersive celebration with a shorter guest list.
Local wedding
Functions in your home city, with most guests travelling from home each day.
Best for: Families with large guest lists, elderly relatives or a tighter budget.
Destination wedding or Local wedding?
Choose a destination wedding if you can cut the list to 100–250 and want a shared, holiday-like celebration. Choose a local wedding if you need to invite 300+ people, have many elderly relatives, or want the lowest cost per guest. Many families do both: a destination wedding for close family and a reception at home.

The real trade-off: guests versus experience
A local wedding lets you invite everyone — neighbours, colleagues, distant cousins — for a few hours each. A destination wedding asks you to cut that list to the people you most want around you, and in return gives you three days together. Neither is better; they are different celebrations.
Cost per guest versus total cost
Destination weddings cost much more per guest because you host rooms, meals across several days, and sometimes travel. But because the guest list is shorter, the total can be similar. A 150-guest wedding in Goa and a 450-guest wedding in Delhi might both cost around ₹40–60 lakh. Model both in the budget calculator and estimate rooms with the guest stay calculator.
Logistics
A destination wedding means flights, room allocations, airport transfers, local vendors you have not met and recce visits. A planner who knows the destination is strongly recommended; see planner vs self-planning. A local wedding is easier to manage with family help.
Family considerations
Think about grandparents and relatives who cannot travel easily, and relatives who may feel left out by a shorter list. Many families solve both by holding a destination wedding for close family and a reception at home a week or two later for everyone else.
Questions to ask as a family
- Who absolutely must be there, and can every one of them travel?
- Will we host rooms and meals only, or flights as well? How will we say so politely?
- Would we rather spend on a setting and three days together, or on a bigger guest list?
- Do we want a reception at home as well, and have we budgeted for it?
- Who will manage the logistics — a planner, or someone in the family with time to spare?
Write down your answers separately and then compare them. Disagreements about the guest list are much easier to settle before any advance has been paid.
Our verdict
Choose a destination wedding if you can keep the list under 250 and want an immersive, shared experience. Choose a local wedding if your list is large, your family is rooted in one city, or budget per guest matters most. Explore destination guides.
