Selecting wedding gifts is not an easy task, especially when it is an Indian wedding. Most of us are not that well aware of the gift registry trend that is usually practised in the West.
If the couple has a wedding registry then the process of providing a wedding gift will be a relatively easy task. You just have to pick one particular item from the wedding registry. Thus you could also make sure that your gift will be useful to the couple.
The gift selection becomes more and more difficult when even though you are related to the bride or the groom you are not that well acquainted with them. Through this article, we could help tell you about certain things which you should avoid while selecting the wedding gifts.
The biggest no while providing wedding gifts is re-packing the gifts you received for your own weddings. Even if you have any number of unused dinner sets or china at your home don't pass it on to another couple as a wedding gift. Well, you could argue that you are gifting it to a couple who are total strangers to the people who originally gifted it to you, but trust us that is not an accepted behaviour.
Wedding gifts are a way of expressing one's happiness and blessings to a couple who is entering a new phase of their lives. So is it proper to bless them with hand-me-downs; definitely not. So stay away from re-wrapping and giving your own gifts to other people.
Another big turn off is giving extremely large artworks which would eat up a lot of space. Art is a tricking thing to select unless you know the couple very well otherwise the art form you think is great for them may look bland to those who are receiving it. And a large piece of artwork (not even original) wouldn't do any good to the couple other than taking up a lot of space.
As mentioned you could gift an artwork if you know the couple’s tastes in art very well or the gift is an original piece of work from a reputed artist and not an ordinary replica.
Another big no is giving half gifts. There are certain gift items that will come in pairs such as salt and pepper shakers, fancy pillow covers, coffee mugs etc... So if you are planning to give this kind of items then make sure that you give them in pairs so that it will be useful to the couples.
We also love to advise you to not waste your money on fancy fresh flower bouquets. As it is easily perishable and the couple hardly gets a chance to appreciate your gift. And what are they going to do with a bunch of rotting flowers?
Giving clothes as wedding gifts too are also not advisable. The logic while gifting artworks also applies here. Gift it unless you are very sure that the colour and style of the clothing you have selected will be loved by the person who is receiving it (the bride or the groom).
