A bride's disappointment in not finding her dream wedding saree has in a way became a boon to many brides who look for innovation and elegance in their bridal outfit.
Kavani, the Kottayam-based bridal boutique, run by mother-daughter duo Laila C Kuruvilla and Tan Kuruvila was started by Tan who found it difficult to get a wedding saree according to her desire.
It was during her wedding saree hunting Tan realised that there were limited saree options for a Christian bride. She searched for the perfect saree in many stores in Kerala, Bangalore and Chennai and finally decided to design her own wedding saree.
She received rave reviews for her design and that encouraged Tan, a BTech graduate, to open a boutique exclusively for the Christian brides.
The unique embellished and hand worked sarees by Kavani has helped many brides to look ethereal in the traditional white/off white, light beige colours. Even after having the limitation in the matter of colour Kavani has created unique pieces for each bride who approached them with trust in their hearts.
Over the years many of our traditional outfits have given way to their western counterparts. One such attire which was on the verge of obscurity was 'chatta-mundu and kavani' - the traditional wear of Christian ladies.
Kavani, the name itself inspired by this traditional wear, has contributed in a big way to revive this outfit and restoring it to its former glory. So far they have designed around eight modern versions of this traditional wear for brides.
The artistic talent Tan has shown from her childhood has helped Kavani to create unique and exquisite sarees, lehengas and gowns which stole the hearts of many brides. The boutique designed the lehenga worn by actress/model Catherine Thangam for her engagement with singer Benny Dayal. She also wore a gorgeous dress by Kavani for her mehndi function.
The materials are sourced from many parts of the country and are hand worked by workers at the boutique's Bengaluru unit.
The boutique also always makes sure that they incorporate the suggestions and ideas put forward by the brides in their creations.
The dedication and hard work Tan and her mother Laila show in their designs have helped Kavani to become the first choice of many Christian brides and that too in a short span of time.
