Adult has the right to marry anyone :  Supreme Court

Feb 6 2018     By Wedding Street

Any adult has the right to marry anyone.  Nobody including parents can question their choice of spouse. The Supreme Court of India bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra has sternly warned Khap Panchayats that they cannot assume to be the conscience keepers of the society. Legality of marriages cannot be based on ‘Gotra’ tradition. It has to go by law to determine legality of a marriage.

Any two persons of marriageable age can marry according to their wish. The Apex Court bench has opined that Khaps or Panchayats cannot assume the role of guardians of society. If a marriage is not permissible under law, there are courts to annual it. Khaps have no business to determine the legality of marriage.
